One of the best sailing experiences I've had. The boat was in excellent condition. The staff were extremely friendly, experienced and helpful. I would highly recommend.
Francesca and her family are running a top-notch business. Everything was exceptional and we were completely satisfied with our trip.
Volos is one of the most populous cities in Greece known for its ports and is home to the ‘tsipouradika’ taverna-style restaurants which feature the popular Greek spirit tsipourno and mezedes (side dishes). Similar to many other Greek cities, Volos is rich in history and filled with a lively seafront and mountain range.
To rent a sailboat in Volos, prices average around £150-£250 a day, with this being the preferred method of sailing over motorboats. For a weeklong charter, prices average around £2500 for a sailboat. However, these prices are not fixed and are subject to change based on several factors including the size of the boat and time of year.
As mentioned above, the availability of a motorboat is very low, as most tourists and locals prefer to charter by sailboat due to the ideal sailing conditions. If you would like to book a boat in Volos but don’t want to captain your own boat, SamBoat has a range of captained boats for you to choose from. The busy season and therefore most expensive time of year to visit Volos is during the summer months of July and August. During this time, temperatures average 30 degrees Celsius with a very low chance of rain, with the winter months being the time when you are most likely to see rain. As with a lot of Greek Islands and cities, sailing is a popular activity and so we recommend you book in advance your boats and other activities as availability goes fast.
The legislation for renting a boat in the Volos is the same as it is for the rest of Greece, depending on what type of boat you would like to rent. If you are looking to hire a motorboat, a license is required if the boat has more than 30hp, if less, no license is needed. If would like to charter a yacht, you will need a valid license as well as a nautical CV detailing the previous boats you captained as well as the different waters you navigated.
Being the home of the mythical centaur, Volos is a popular city which has been around since ancient Greece, and thus there is no shortage of history and culture to immerse yourself in. To learn more about the history of Volos and of Greece, visit the Athanasakeion Archeological Museum or Tsalapatas Museum, or if you would rather learn more about the culture while still enjoying the sun, visit the ruins of the Volos Castle or the Archaeological Site of Dimini.
To properly explore all the city has to offer, walk along the harbour where you can admire some of the largest yachts that are docked, and enjoy a seaside restaurant or bar. Then head over to the Kordoni, the famous local pier where locals fish and you can admire the beautiful landscape of Volos.
If you would rather relax and enjoy the beautiful weather, head over to the numerous beaches scattered across the coast. The most popular choice is Alykes, which offers watersports, seaside bars and the famous tsipouradika taverns. On cooler days, hire a bike and travel down the cycle paths next to the beach. For some traditional Greek food and atmosphere, visit the Palea District at night, or during the day to see the museums, old city walls and old train station.
For a unique experience, spend the day in the mountain villages of Ano Gatzea and Milies by taking the little train of Pelion, a classic gauge steam train which takes you through the forests of Pelion, passing through the stone arches of the old bridges. Being surrounded by mountains, there are many great day trips to take to close mountain villages that you wouldn’t else be able to take during a yacht charter, which makes Volos a great city to spend several days before jetting away on your sailing holiday. Being close to Skopelos which has a large marina, it is a must to visit Skopelos on your Volos charter. Being in the Sporades Islands, there are a lot of smaller but just as beautiful islands close to Volos which make great day trips to visit as you travel between the bigger islands and cities.
