Our boat trip from Portoferraio was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The boat was great and had a lot of power. Thank you Fabrizio, for the good instructions and everything else.

Lots of people in the area, at the same time, it's August, very beautiful beaches. My only regret, a limited sailing area, certainly sufficient and very beautiful, but we had planned a completely different route that we couldn't do.
Beaucoup de monde sur la zone, en même temps, nous sommes au mois d'août, très belles plages. mon seul regret, une zone limitée de navigation, certes suffisante et très belle, mais nous avions prévu un tout autre parcours que nous n'avons pas pu faire.

Good area for inexperienced skippers (shelter from any type of wind within range).
Bonne zone pour skippers non expérimentés (abris face à tout type de vent à portée).

Rent a boat with or without captain in Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany is a culturally rich region in Italy that boasts endless amounts of art and a landscape that will leave you certainly in awe. The Tuscan region offers immeasurable exceptional places like small medieval villages and stunning beaches tucked away in the woods.

Pricing and Info on renting a boat

For a day trip, renting a motorboat in Tuscany goes as low as £43, however, they average at around £150-£300. For a sailboat, prices are slightly higher at around £300 on average. For a weeklong charter, a motorboat will average at £1000-£1400, while a sailboat for the same week would cost about £2000-£2500. However, these prices are not set and will fluctuate based on a range of factors such as the size of the boat and the time of year you are going.

Boat availability in Tuscany

The tourist season in Tuscany lasts from April to October, with these months being the best time to travel but also the busiest and most expensive. If you want to go to enjoy the sun, the hottest time of year is July and August, averaging in the high 20 degrees Celsius, to the low 30s. The low season in the winter can still be sunny, however, the nights are very cold, while the beginning of the year in March and April can be the months which get the most amount of rain. If you plan to visit Tuscany from April to October, it is important to book everything in advance, from hotels to boats, as Tuscany is a very popular tourist destination not only for international travellers but also domestically.

Do I need a license to rent a boat in Tuscany?

You will need a license to rent a boat in Tuscany as you will in the whole of Italy. You will need an RYA Day Captain (or an ICC qualification) for bareboat charters. However, if you do not have/want to get these licenses, then SamBoat has a range of boats you can rent with captains.

Overview of Tuscany

The region of Tuscany is rich in places to visit and things to do. From Florence to Siena, the history and culture are endless, including the Abbey of San Galgano, to the Medici Villa of Cerreto Guidi. For art lovers, visit the Uffizi Gallery, which features the world-famous ‘Birth of Venus' painting.

However, if you are visiting Tuscany for the sailing holiday, the place to go is the Tuscan Archipelago, a chain of islands located between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. One of the largest of the islands in the archipelago is Elba, which also happens to be the busiest. The clear water surrounded by white beaches and sheltered coves provides a great escape. To get to know the inner island, dock at one of the four ports of the island: Portoferraio, Marciana Marina, Campo nell’Elba or Porto Azzurro.

After Elba, the ideal place to voyage to would be the island of Pianosa. The island was forbidden to everyone up until 1997, which makes it an untouched paradise today. The islands of Gorgona and Giglio should also be mandatory on your travel itinerary. Giglio is the second largest island and is filled with picturesque scenery and places to explore, such as the Torre del Saraceno and Caletta del Saraceno.

The culture on the islands is similar to that of the rest of the Tuscany regions, which means there is no shortage of incredible food to try, or wine tasting, which is another popular activity in Tuscany.
