Karavakia: Greece’s Sailor Christmas

In Greece, decorated boats light up the season, a nod to families’ seafaring heritage. In the past, when most men worked as sailors, children would build toy boats to celebrate their love for the sea and express their longing for relatives away on voyages. On Christmas Eve, children would visit homes singing carols, carrying their handcrafted boats.

Even today, despite the widespread popularity of Christmas trees, decorated boats remain a vibrant symbol of Greece’s maritime culture, representing journeys and hopes for a peaceful future.

Italy’s Floating Nativity Scene

The Cesenatico’s Maritime Museum in Italy,  transforms each Christmas into a magical floating nativity scene. Life-sized statues aboard 10  ancient boats tell the story of the season. There are a total of 50 statues, with a new character added each year. The figures are arranged like a scene to be viewed from the canal’s banks, as if one were in the audience of a theatre.

Lighting plays a key role, bringing the figures to life and setting the narrative. Book your boat in Cesenatico now and experience the event in person!

Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, his bond with seafarers has strengthened over centuries. Revered as the protector of children, the saint also holds a special place in Christmas traditions. In Trieste, his legacy is celebrated each December 6, blending maritime and festive cheer. Book a boat and experience the celebrations in person!

This season, let the sea’s stories add a splash of wonder to your celebrations.
